Beschreibung

The history of the so-called normalization and transformation has recently become a very popular and discussed topic not only within the academic community but also among the general public. This interest is met by the presented collective monograph, which loosely follows the previous book from the Oral History Center of the Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Ordinary People...? Prague, Academia 2009). The stories of (un)ordinary professions present the fates and memories of men and women performing several seemingly 'ordinary' professions. In the form of interpretative studies, the book captures the experiences of members of the so-called power structures (army, security/police, firefighters), employees (primarily women) working in services (hospitality, retail, healthcare), and in so-called free professions (here exemplified by visual artists). Members of economic and partly cultural management are also included, as well as those whose fates are connected with the agricultural sector and the rural world.
