Beschreibung
A unique Japanese illustrated manuscript, Ögi no söshi, or A Book of Fans, is held by the National Gallery in Prague. It contains waka poetry illustrated in the shape of fans, a poetic tradition widespread from the end of the Muromachi period (1336–1573) to the early Edo period (1603–1867). With 120 surviving poems, the Prague manuscript is the largest collection of its kind in the world. The accompanying studies are written by specialists from three continents: Japanese scholar Makoto Yasuhara conducts foundational research into the manuscript, Canadian Professor Mostow analyzes it in the context of contemporary literary and theatrical forms, and Czech Japanologist Helena Honcoopová adds an artistic and literary perspective on the development of Japanese culture.
