Mistr Třeboňského oltáře – Royt Jan (2013)

This Czech-language scholarly monograph examines the Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece, one of the most important figures in European Gothic painting of the International Gothic style. Art historians have offered differing views on the attribution, dating and chronology of works associated with this anonymous artist, the artistic and intellectual foundations of his work, and the reconstruction and origin of the so-called Třeboň Altarpiece. Jan Royt’s study addresses these questions in detail. Its opening chapters outline historical events and the development of painting in Europe and Bohemia during the final third of the 14th century, including the spiritual background of the period. The main section provides an artistic and iconographic analysis of the Master’s work and of pieces from his workshop and circle, as well as his importance in shaping the Beautiful Style. The book also examines various hypothetical reconstructions of the altarpiece, including drawings, and concludes with a detailed, critical overview of art historians’ views on this medieval artist. An appendix by Adam Pokorný presents the results of conservation research on the Master’s panel paintings, together with examples of the visual documentation.
