Secondary metabolites of plants are substances currently being studied very intensively in terms of potential medicines and dietary supplements. This monograph follows Volume 1, which dealt with primary metabolites and substances of structured biological systems. The classification of substances is based on their biogenesis (metabolites derived from 2-methylbuta-1,3-diene units – terpenes, metabolites derived from shikimic acid – phenolic compounds, and substances from amino acid metabolism) and covers all important structural types that possess usable biological effects. For individual substances (plants, extracts, and other forms) used or proposed for use as part of dietary supplements, the chemical composition (parent plant), structural formula (formulas), effects and uses, contraindications, undesirable and side effects, interactions with concurrently administered medications, and dosing are provided. Each of the three main chapters concludes with a list of literary sources from which the data were drawn.
