This book presents selected chapters from the history of libraries and librarianship around the world, from the beginnings of writing in ancient Egypt and the empires of Mesopotamia through the libraries of ancient Greece and Rome and the medieval and modern libraries of Europe. Its second part provides a continuous overview of the history of Czech libraries and librarianship, from the first chapter and monastic libraries at the dawn of Czech history in the tenth and eleventh centuries to interwar Czechoslovakia, a period associated with the extensive development of a public library network and the beginnings of scientific library theory. The contents are in Czech.
