Paul's return to his hometown is as little joyful as his departure once was. Thirty years ago, war in the former Yugoslavia drove him away from Rijeka as a small boy. He left behind friends and grandparents, but now a sad message has brought him back home: his grandmother has passed away, his last link to his homeland. Adult Paul, who can barely speak his native language after all these years, arrives in the city named after a river, Rijeka, to settle his grandmother's estate. However, he soon discovers that he has inherited something much stranger than just a neglected apartment in the center overflowing with seemingly useless junk. The kind and unassuming old lady he loved so much was actually a krsnik, a being endowed with hereditary magical abilities in Croatian mythology. The krsnik's task has been to guard the boundary between the world of humans and the world on the other side, inhabited not only by friendly dead but also by treacherous creatures for whom human beings represent prey from which they draw energy. Such a legacy was unexpected for Paul, and he never imagined that it could not be renounced. The unwanted burden falls on his shoulders, along with the danger that it will turn everything he thought he knew about life, the city where he once lived, and himself upside down. The boundary…
