Beschreibung

On February 7, 1311, the new Czech king John of Luxembourg and his wife Eliška were ceremoniously crowned in St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle. For her coronation, a magnificent golden diadem adorned with pearls and sapphires, which had been worn by her mother Guta of Habsburg, was used. Since then, it has been stored along with other coronation jewels in the treasury of St. Vitus Cathedral. However, when Queen Eliška was to wear this precious diadem again for the baptism of her son Václav, the future Charles IV, it was discovered that it was missing from the treasury. The primary suspect for its theft was King John himself, who needed money for military assistance to Ludwig of Bavaria against the rival king of the Romans, Frederick the Handsome. However, the king could not be easily accused, so the queen's confidant, Vilém Zajíc of Valdek, requested an investigation into the theft of the diadem by the royal judge Melichar of Roupov. However, there is alarmingly little time for its clarification. The date for the baptism of little Václav is rapidly approaching, and Melichar finds himself in a very uncomfortable situation.
