Emma Carpenter is watching over an old house on the beach with her golden retriever. Her only contact with people is the mysterious old neighbor Deek and (through SMS) the owner of the house, Jules. When Emma reads a lousy but terrifying horror novel by a certain H. G. Kane and gives it a one-star review, she gets drawn into an online dispute with the author himself. Soon after, disturbing things start happening at night. It can't be a coincidence. Is the writer stalking her? As Emma investigates Kane's life and work, she discovers that he has published sixteen other books, all with similarly sadistic stories. But who is he? How did he find her? And what is he capable of?
