Everyone in Wakarusa remembers the long-ago case of January Jacobs. Margot was six at the time, just like January. She has long since moved away and is now a journalist, but she has always been haunted by the fear that she could have died in January's place. When she returns home to help care for her uncle, it feels like a trip back in time. Wakarusa remains the same: suffocating and secretive. Then, under eerily similar circumstances, five-year-old Natalie from the neighboring town goes missing. All of Margot's old feelings resurface, and she vows to find the little girl and uncover what happened years ago. However, it seems that the police, family, and local residents are hiding something.
