Kreminna, trenches of the Ukrainian army, mid-March 2023. It is a clear night, but darkness prevails in the trench, illuminated only by the flickering flame of a candle. It is twenty minutes to midnight. I am on the zero line, the line of contact between Russian and Ukrainian forces. An artillery battle rages around me. I am scared. The same fear that all soldiers on the zero line feel. When the first Russian missiles began to hit Ukraine on February 24, 2022, war journalist and photographer Lenka Klicperová got into her car and headed east. She was with Ukrainian civilians in the early days of the invasion when the country was gripped by panic and fear, which gradually transformed into a stubborn determination to defend their homeland. She spoke with victims of war crimes, worked at the sites of missile attacks, and on the front lines across the Donbas. Her reporting book shows a year of war that changed Europe and the world, and whose final consequences we do not yet know.
