Frankie Elkin is an average middle-aged woman, a recovering alcoholic, who has more regrets than possessions. However, she spends her life doing what no one else does – searching for missing people whom the police cannot help, or who are not being investigated as they should be. Her new case takes her to Mattapan, a Boston neighborhood with a rough reputation. She is looking for Angelique Badeau, a Haitian girl who disappeared several months ago. Frankie encounters the Boston police's resistance and the cautious family of the missing girl and realizes that she is on her own. Soon, she also discovers that she is asking questions that someone does not want answered. However, Frankie will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. A television series based on the book will star Hilary Swank.
