Hazel was diagnosed with cancer at thirteen. Now she is sixteen, and the cancer is in its final stage. No one knows how long she will live, but they know that death is inevitable. Hazel spends her days watching the endless show America's Next Top Model and reading her favorite book by Dutch author Peter Van Houten. She reluctantly starts attending a support group where people with cancer gather. There she meets the charming Augustus Waters, who has come out of his battle with cancer with a leg amputation. They begin to spend time together, and Gus awakens in Hazel a desire to live again. However, Hazel realizes that she could die any day, so she is afraid to fall in love with Gus - she doesn't want to break his heart with her departure. But Gus convinces her that they should enjoy the beauty of being in love precisely because of how little time they both have left... Recommended age 13+.
