Despite being suspended, Armand Gamache is certainly not idle. He is trying to track down a shipment of dangerous drugs before they reach the public and start killing people. Things get even more complicated when he receives a strange invitation to an old abandoned estate and discovers that a completely unknown woman has named him the executor of her will – along with Myrna Landers, the owner of the bookstore in Three Pines, and some young man from Montreal. None of them knew the deceased. Moreover, the old lady bequeaths her heirs a fortune she never had. Or did she? As Gamache and the others try to unravel this mystery, it becomes clear that nothing is as it seems, and the situation hides unforeseen dangers – especially when a corpse appears on the scene.
