Beschreibung
The book maps the fates of the aristocracy in the Czech lands from the times of the Czech kings to the present day. It tells the stories of exceptional men and women, but also of the black sheep of the family, significant diplomats, military leaders, and travelers, as well as happy and unsuccessful marriages. It also contains many interesting facts, such as why the governors thrown out of the windows of Prague Castle survived the fall without serious injuries, why Albrecht von Wallenstein was buried three times, how many times Kateřina Zaháňská, known as the princess from Babička, married and how many lovers she had, why Kateřina Bechyňová from Lažany was sentenced to death by starvation, or how Prince Adam Franz of Schwarzenberg died. It may come as a surprise that during the First Republic, the use of noble titles was prohibited and a land reform was carried out that significantly reduced the wealth of the aristocracy.
