Malcolm Bannister was a lawyer somewhere in Virginia. However, his life changed due to a routine real estate transaction in which he assisted with the purchase of a hunting lodge. The remote estate was used by a lobbyist to host sexual orgies for corrupt congressmen. After the scandal broke, Bannister was also convicted. The story begins when Bannister is halfway through his sentence. Excluded from the legal profession, divorced, he feels hatred towards the government and the FBI. His chance for justice comes after the murder of a federal judge and his mistress. The FBI struggles to solve the case, so they seek help from Bannister, who knows why they died and what the judge was hiding.
