Beschreibung
For years, the SS organization held special and honorable prisoners from Germany and abroad in the concentration camps of Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, and Dachau. For this purpose, castles, locks, and hotels were confiscated to serve as residences for high-ranking state prisoners. These prisoners, usually held in strict isolation from the outside world, had a special status within the Nazi repressive system. They often even had their own staff at their disposal. Among the hostages were politicians, soldiers, industrialists, clergy, and members of the nobility. There were also regime opponents among them, such as Pastor Martin Niemöller, failed assassin of Hitler Georg Elser, and former Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg. Also included was Stalin's son Yakov Dzhugashvili, whom his father refused to exchange for German hostages. Honorable prisoners included Dutch Prime Minister Hendrik Coljins, Regent of the Kingdom of Hungary Miklós Horthy, Italian Princess Mafalda, Belgian King Leopold III, and French Prime Minister Léon Blum. This book brings a wealth of new insights into the National Socialist repressive policy.
