The connection between the two main characters, London university teacher Jess and the daughter of the Celtic king Eigon, is a horrifying experience of rape and persecution. Ancient Rome comes to life in the first decades of the empire, during the time of Saint Peter and the persecution of Christians, under the reign of emperors Claudius and later Nero. The plot then returns to Britain in the 1st century AD. The contemporary story unfolds over one summer in Wales and Rome, and Jess's dramatic experiences here are also related to the ancient story.
