In Byzantium in AD 552, imperial scouts Taurus and Olympiodoros travel to distant Asia to uncover the secret of silk production. They succeed in stealing silkworms and hiding them inside hollow pilgrims’ staffs. Disguised as Buddhist monks, they attempt to transport their precious cargo safely back to Byzantium, traveling 8,000 miles along the Silk Road. Knowledge of the valuable material sustains entire nations, whose rulers immediately launch a pursuit. Before long, the lives of both Byzantines and their mysterious guide Che-lien Cchuej hang by a silk thread.
