In the forests around Křivoklát Castle, King John of Luxembourg is organizing a deer hunt. During the hunt, the royal huntsman Hynek of Buková is killed. Was it just an unfortunate accident or a deliberate murder? John of Luxembourg even suspects that he himself was meant to be the victim of this murder. He calls upon his favorite investigator, the royal judge Melichar of Roupov, who once saved his life, to capture the alleged murderer. However, he complicates matters by leaving the Kingdom of Bohemia shortly after and going abroad. Melichar is left alone against all the suspects, mostly prominent Czech nobles who are not at all inclined to help him. He will even have to face an assassination attempt. Who wanted to get rid of him and why? Perhaps to prevent the clarification of the murder of royal huntsman Hynek? And was Hynek really meant to be killed, or was it the king himself?
