A young impractical dreamer and introvert discovers an unfinished family tree after his father's death, containing a mysterious red question mark that changes his life. Averse to all travel and an incorrigible dreamer, he embarks on an adventurous search for an unknown ancestor, whose century-old traces lead him all the way to distant Siberia, but convoluted events also unfold in Moscow, Kyiv, the Russian countryside, and especially in an unnamed Czech provincial town and in Prague. The story takes place in 1913, is fictional, although the historical data and realities are true. The plot is interwoven with the generous imagination of the 'hero,' exotic natural colors, problematic contemporary society and history, and urgent echoes of the First World War, including the actions of Czechoslovak legionnaires and the legend of gold sunk in Lake Baikal.
