What will the landscape look like after the bark beetle disaster? Will we still see a new forest grow and smell its scent? The hero of the novel, forester Kamil, already knows. He experienced the beginnings of the bark beetle calamity before the year 2000 and fought against the four-millimeter beetle for part of his productive forestry life. Aleš Dostál's latest novel takes place in an unspecified foothill region of Moravia. The main character, a fresh retiree, returns to the place of his first posting after twenty years due to a school reunion. Here, in 1992, his great bark beetle war began, and from here he had to leave due to certain misunderstandings and injustices. Kamil looks forward to meeting his classmates and friends while imagining what the new forest he established after the calamity looks like. Is there a monument of glory or shame left behind?
