This Christmas songbook is based on extensive collections by the prominent Czech musician and composer Pavel Jurkovič, who dedicated many years to songs associated with the Advent and Christmas season. It contains over a hundred Czech and foreign carols, songs, rorates, and folk Christmas songs. The first part includes songs from hymnals, chorales, and Latin medieval and baroque chants. The second part is devoted to Czech and Moravian carols, both the most famous and lesser-known ones. Melancholic, dignified melodies alternate with cheerful, joyful, and humorous ones. The third part summarizes foreign carols from all corners of the world, featuring texts in both Czech translations and in their original English, French, German, or other languages. The concluding section presents popular winter songs arranged by Pavel Jurkovič. The songs cover the four-week Advent period, the Christmas holidays, and the beginning of January up to Candlemas. The songbook is intended for the general public, for choirs, and for home music-making during this sacred time. Thanks to its practical binding, it can be taken along for caroling, used during performances, or placed in a piano stand so that the whole family can gather around and sing together to the Bethlehem child.
