Beschreibung
The book addresses the cultural processes of negotiating symbolic boundaries of belonging in the Czech immigration context. Based on qualitative analysis of biographical interviews with immigrants from Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia living in the Czech Republic, the author investigates how symbolic boundaries of belonging are formed through stigma in everyday interactions within the social and cultural context of immigration. The book notes the contradictory cultural representation of this group of migrants in the Czech space of ethnicized relations – a particular tension between the position of the 'Other' and 'Brother' in relation to Czechs. This tension reflects past and present processes of nation-building in Central and Eastern Europe, historical political relations between socialist Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union, and migration processes in the post-1989 period. The book offers new insights into the cultural repertoire of the Czech immigration context and the negotiation of the boundaries of Czech identity.
