Beschreibung

The book presents urban planning from the perspective of urban sociology. It seeks to determine why urban planning as a subject of study in sociology appears only rarely, highlights its connections with urban sociology, and offers arguments for its study as a distinct area of knowledge and thinking about the city. As a key issue, it presents the relationship between historical transformations of urban planning – its principles, ideas, and practices – and social changes. This question is subsequently addressed through the example of planning the city of Brno during the period of state socialism and after 1989. The analysis of planning concepts prepared for the city of Brno in 1951, 1966, 1973, 2002, and 2007 serves as a basis for a discussion about the existing knowledge of urban planning in (post) socialism in cities in Central and Eastern Europe. It points not only to changes but also to continuity in ideas, practices, or projects prepared for Brno from the mid-20th century to the present.
