Beschreibung
Petr Iljič Něstěrenko maintains an intimate daily relationship with death. As the first director of the Moscow crematorium, built in 1927, he worked two shifts – during the day, cremating ordinary Soviet citizens and at night, those arrested by the secret police who ended up at the execution site. Něstěrenko burned them all: regime opponents, alleged spies, and former heroes of the revolution. He worked at the crematorium until 1941, when he met the same fate as those whose bodies he cremated – the NKVD came for him, and he was accused of espionage. His life story and incredible fate gave rise to this documentary novel. Behind every scene, one can also sense a reflection of today's socio-political situation. The allegory is clear: the harshest crematorium is history. History, for which one person is utterly insignificant.
