The novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Han Kang, like her prose "Where the Grass Blooms," deals with real historical events. This time, it goes back to the beginnings of the Republic of Korea, to the massacres that occurred during the rule of the first president, Syngman Rhee – to the bloody suppression of the uprising on Jeju Island. One winter day, young writer Kyoungha receives a call from her friend Inson, who finds herself in a hospital in Seoul. She asks Kyoungha to go to her family home on Jeju Island and take care of her parrot. When Kyoungha manages to reach the mountain village despite a strong snowstorm, she uncovers the painful history of Inson's family marked by the Jeju uprising. The narrative travels back in time through memories, records, and other materials that Inson's mother collected throughout her life in a futile search for her missing brother.
