The essayistic part concerns the life of Julian Apostate, the Roman emperor who attempted to reverse the Christian development of his empire. While Elizabeth Finch fits into the same category as the author's previous works, this novel is likely his deepest and most radical text regarding reflections on history and Christianity or the concept of alternative histories. Moreover, it is a highly relevant novel, as it reflects the doubts and fragmentation of the contemporary world.
