How to "philosophically" justify murder? That the lives of some people are worthless, and therefore it is not a sin to take them? This is somewhat how Raskolnikov thinks, the key character in Dostoevsky's 1866 novel. After his horrific act, he flees and ends up in the family of the alcoholic Marmeladov. Raskolnikov falls in love with his daughter Sonia and confides in her about the crime he committed. It is she who convinces him to confess and accept his punishment. The work is published in a new translation by Libor Dvořák.
