Katarína returns from Prague to her native Bratislava for the Christmas holidays to spend some time with her parents and brother. However, two members are missing from the Christmas table: Dora, her older sister who has been living in the USA for several years, and Katarína's Czech husband Evžen. While the family has long ignored Dora's absence and acts as if she doesn't exist, Katarína must explain Evžen's sudden absence. The fact that her husband hasn't slept at home for two months and that she actually doesn't know where he is will likely not be enough. The separation between the main character and her husband parallels the Velvet Divorce between the Czech and Slovak Republics. It is a story about absence that weighs heavily, about desires we are afraid to express, about betrayal, and the complicated search for oneself. Slovak author Jana Karšaiová chose Italian as her literary language and was nominated for the prestigious Strega Prize in 2022 for her novel Velvet Divorce.
