Beschreibung
Mieko Kawakami, the author of the bestseller Breasts and Eggs, is considered the most prominent contemporary Japanese writer. For her novel Heaven, she received the Japanese literary award (the Murasaki Shikibu Prize) and was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize (2022). The protagonist and narrator of the novel, a fourteen-year-old high school student, is known to readers by the nickname Shilhavec, given to him by his classmates. Because of this, he is also the target of bullying at school. The boy silently suffers in solitude until he forms a friendship with a classmate, Kodjima – she is the only one who can understand what he is going through, as she is also a victim of bullying. The world of the lonely, introverted boy suddenly changes when he has the opportunity to share his troubles, discuss the reasons for bullying, the morality of the bullies, and the victims. Kodjima urges Shilhavec to reflect on his own passivity in the face of violence, attributing moral superiority, even a certain victory, to those who become victims.
