Beschreibung
The first novel by the renowned English writer was published in 1915, and Woolf worked on it during an unusually difficult time for her, when she suffered from recurring depression. The work retains a traditional novel form but already contains the seeds of what characterizes the author's peak creations: an innovative narrative style, insight into the female psyche, themes of sexuality and death. In 1920, Virginia Woolf wrote in her diary: 'Every day from twelve to one I read The Voyage... it is such a mixture of images – sometimes clearly understandable and serious – sometimes playful and superficial – sometimes true as the word of God – sometimes strong and flowing lightly and perfectly... I blush with shame over the shortcomings, and then a sentence, a clairvoyantly expressed idea, ignites my face with a completely different feeling. I actually have to admire that young woman: how boldly she leaps over obstacles – and she really knows how to write, that much must be acknowledged!'
