The renowned novel by John Irving depicts the life and views of the fictional writer T. S. Garp. As the son of the eccentric Jenny Fields, who decided to have a child without a husband, Garp grows up under her guidance into quite a peculiar personality. After graduating from high school, he and his mother move to Vienna, both with the same goal: to start writing. Jenny writes her autobiography, Sexual Suspect, which instantly makes her famous, and she becomes a leading author of the women's movement. Garp, on the other hand, writes a short story to marry Helen, who is only willing to marry a writer... However, Garp is not a prominent writer, and in his somewhat affected work, he deals with his most personal, increasingly painful experiences, which seem to directly materialize the terrifying visions that haunt him as a caring husband and father. He gains fame with his sensational novel The World According to Bensenhaver, but the role of a public figure catches him off guard once again. Although Irving's grotesque novel is full of comedic situations, it touches on sensitive and current issues of today's civilization - questions of individuality, personality, sexuality, the women's movement, violence, and the fear of misfortune and death.
