Maxim Gorky (1868–1936) is one of the most remarkable figures in Russian literature. This true "man of the people" drew themes for his small and large works right from the people – and thus the evaluation of his work is very diverse: some label him a genius and master of literary epic, while others see him merely as a collector of cheap banalities. A special place in his artistic legacy is occupied by the short stories with which he began and to which he devoted his entire life. It seems that especially the author's short stories playfully transcend the chasm of time that separates the period of their creation from today. A collection titled The Birth of Man is being published in a new translation by Libor Dvořák.
