In the summer of 1885, three Frenchmen arrive in London. The first is the Duke Edmond de Polignac, a typical fortune hunter from the French upper classes seeking a wealthy American wife. The second is Count Robert Montesquiou-Fezensac, an average poet and enthusiastic collector of curiosities who is always arguing with someone. The third is an ordinary citizen with an Italian name: Dr Samuel Pozzi, a doctor, thinker and scientist who becomes the guide through this story. What significance does their stay ultimately have? This Czech-language novel portrays the Belle Époque, the beautiful era when the Eiffel Tower is completed in Paris and Sarah Bernhardt is at the height of her career, but also a time of bizarre duels, murders and trials, including the notorious Dreyfus affair.
