Emigration, a word that attacks the average person from every side today. A word that respects no time, embedding itself deeper into your subconscious from the moment you turn on the radio with your morning coffee. Through the press, it assaults you from every newspaper throughout the day. Evening comes, you want to relax, you turn on the television, and emigration won't leave you alone even in the news. After a while, the average citizen no longer reacts to that word, but a curious Slovak, like the author of this novel, looks it up on Wikipedia and finds out that emigration is essentially expatriation. He reads further; after all, this is nothing new, expatriation existed long before the flood. People have been moving from place to place throughout history constantly. Some were dissatisfied with the poor land that could not sustain them. Others fled from cruel rulers who forbade them to think, and others simply sought to enrich their lives with new knowledge and experience extraordinary adventures. This ailment of discontent, where a person leaves their homeland, has not spared even the tiny nation in the heart of Europe. The Slovak nation began to migrate massively from the mid-nineteenth century, as soon as the authorities loosened the reins of serfdom. Due to poverty, we migrated during the First Republic.
