Beschreibung
Edwin P. Hoyt, an American military historian and journalist, served in the U.S. Air Force, worked in the Office of War Information from 1943 to 1945, later turned to journalism, and taught at a university. In his book 1944?: War in the Central Pacific, he takes readers to the heart of the battles of the American Pacific Fleet, which took place during the Americans' advance through Eniwetok, Kwajalein, and Saipan, the capture of Guam and Tinian, up to June 1944, when they managed to break through the Japanese defensive perimeter in the Central Pacific during the invasion of the Mariana Islands. The author presents the battles from both American and Japanese perspectives. In addition to the description of the events, he provides insight behind the scenes of decision-making among the highest echelons of American command, including the disagreements on the most effective approach through the Central Pacific towards the Japanese islands. The book 1944: War in the Central Pacific is the second part of Hoyt's trilogy dedicated to the battles of Americans against the Japanese in the Pacific. The main theme of the first part, Storm over the Gilbert Islands, published in 2019, is the invasion of Tarawa and Makin. The final battles in 1945 are described in the third part, The Circle Closes, which is scheduled for release in 2022.
