He succumbed to cholera in 1831, but even more than a hundred years later, during the time of Hitler's 'Third Reich', his words held their validity. The romantic notion that a secret front, referred to by some insiders as the lower level of war, determined everything significant that happened during the preparations for aggression and then directly during the war itself is far from reality. However, it would also be untrue to claim that this behind-the-scenes, hidden, and in many ways still uncharted and perhaps unchartable activity remained completely without influence on the course of events. The truth lies, as it often does, somewhere in between. And it is precisely the search for truth that attracts us. We seek nothing less as we attempt to delve beneath the surface of the dramatic events during the time when Nazi Germany was preparing the individual stages of its shamelessly grandiose conquest.
