Beschreibung
This work, in its first part, provides a general overview of the Eastern Bohemian resistance from 1939 to 1945. In it, foresters, forest workers, and other men and women, for whom the forest was home, a source of livelihood, and a love, played a significant role. Those who had to flee from arrest or total mobilization in the Reich found help from the foresters in the remote areas, as did escaped prisoners and crew members of downed aircraft, and from mid-1944, partisans – the foresters themselves became active members of partisan units. Many foresters and their family members became victims of Nazi terror and the struggle for freedom and democracy. The fates of these people, whose lives were intertwined with life and work in the forests of Eastern Bohemia, their participation in the fight for the freedom of Czechoslovakia, their patriotism, and sacrifices are commemorated in the second part of the book, which presents the life stories of twelve of them. The conclusion is dedicated to the memory of the foresters who laid down their lives for their country.
