On February 18, 1853, the young Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I was assassinated by a Hungarian assassin. According to the line of succession, his younger brother Maximilian, who had grown up outside the court as a captain in the navy in Trieste, was called to the throne. Maximilian is sharp, clever, and an experienced cosmopolitan, used to acting for himself. After his coronation, he quickly built his secret cabinet from capable men. During the Crimean War, he skillfully maneuvered, maintained the empire's neutrality, used the war to implement fundamental reforms, and improved Austria's financial situation. He managed to reconcile the warring nations and gain a protectorate over Romania. He succeeded in rearming the army and in 1859 decisively defeated the predatory French and nationalist Italians in northern Italy, securing the right to organize Italy in a purely conservative spirit. He became a successful emperor, and now he faces his final military test, as Prussia can only remain strong by pushing Austria out of the German Confederation. Maximilian knows who his true enemy is, who finances such wars, who exploits liberalism, nationalism, and debt dependencies to undermine the traditional order of Christian Europe.
