Beschreibung
Travis McGee and his friend Meyer, while driving at night on an abandoned highway, swerve into a drainage ditch when their car swerves to avoid a young woman dressed only in a nightgown who runs across the road. They walk to a service station, where they are arrested by the sheriff for the premeditated murder of a person they do not even know, and find themselves in county jail, from which they are bailed out by a lawyer. The lawyer sees an opportunity for profit in later representing the real criminals, so he pays McGee to investigate them.
