Central Europe in the political plans of the great powers during the Great War at the peace conference in Paris (1914-1918 / 1919-1920) During World War I, each great power had a whole range of strategic interests that also concerned Central and Eastern Europe, primarily the future fate of Austria-Hungary. By the end of 1918 and in the following months of 1919, the victory of the United States, Great Britain, France, and their allies over Germany became decisive for the great powers' approach to these European regions. At the same time, the national liberation struggle of nations culminated, the Habsburg, Hohenzollern, Romanov, and Ottoman empires disintegrated, and "successor" states were created. The victorious powers sought to quickly stabilize the strained legal, national, social, economic, and geographical (border) conditions in Central and Eastern Europe and to prevent the spread of communism into Western Europe. In this context, especially the Americans and the British counted on a transformed and democratized Germany as an equal partner for maintaining stability in continental Europe. Based on the outcome of World War I and great power calculations, an independent Czechoslovakia also emerged, which joined the allied system of France...
