Beschreibung
The fighter aviation represented the absolute elite of an already elite weapon, the air force. The same was true in Germany. Fighters were supposed to dominate the skies over the battlefield, and at the beginning of World War II, they succeeded in doing so. Pilots in the cockpits of Messerschmitts ruled the skies over both the Western and Eastern fronts for a long time. Many received the highest honors and decorations, and the accounts of the best included hundreds of enemy aircraft shot down. However, the war developed differently than the command expected. German fighters gradually lost their dominance and ultimately fought for mere survival.
