Shallow breathing is not as healthy as deep breathing, which, however, should not exceed the point where a person becomes tense, whether during inhalation or exhalation in an effort to achieve the largest possible breath volume. In more advanced exercises, breath holds are also incorporated. Mastery of the art of breathing is conscious breathing, as practiced in many forms of qigong, the Chinese art of breath, which is the main theme of the book.
