Beschreibung
This book critically analyzes the role of the so-called Castle in the political, social and cultural context of interwar Czechoslovakia. In contrast to the historiographical interpretations that have prevailed until now, it presents the Castle as a cluster of social networks centered primarily around T. G. Masaryk and E. Beneš, who were also the main authors of the ideas shaping its activities. The individual chapters trace the work of the Castle’s confidants as they filled communication gaps in the networked structure of contemporary society. Like weavers, they connected the Castle into a unified whole through money, representation, propaganda, intelligence, the symbolism of space and expertise. They energetically incorporated Slovaks, Germans and other nationalities in Czechoslovakia into their networks. This Castle aspired to build the state and strengthen connections and mutual understanding with the “rest” of civil society. The contents are in Czech.
