This Czech-language nonfiction book follows the rise of the workers’ movement through the example of a small, elite and elitist group of workers during fundamental social and political changes, from the eve of the 1848 revolution to the beginning of the First World War. Its main focus is the changing collective identities of manual workers in the modern age, viewed as a basis for collective strategies and practices within social movements. The study describes typographic traditions and symbols shaped since the invention of printing, as well as social conflicts and collective bargaining over working conditions during the era of high industrial capitalism and the mass workers’ movement at the turn of the 20th century. It examines the solidarity networks of typographic workers not only in relation to other workers, but also to the non-worker environment, particularly the educated middle-class milieu, which played an important role for typographers.
