Beschreibung
This Czech-language monograph examines the Russian White émigré community in interwar Czechoslovakia, where approximately 30,000 people from the former Russian Empire lived after the 1917 revolution and subsequent civil war. A distinctive group among them was the Russian scientific and cultural elite, including hundreds of professors, university staff and researchers from numerous fields. While previous studies have focused mainly on figures from the humanities and arts, the work of émigré specialists in technical, natural and agricultural sciences has remained largely undocumented. The book charts their activities during their years in Czechoslovakia, where they worked as teachers, in practice and in research, often achieving distinction in their fields. Drawing extensively on contemporary newspapers, obituaries, archival and family materials, and a database of patents, it also describes the émigrés’ lives and the difficulties they faced.
