Beschreibung
This English-language monograph examines the Prague Belvedere, a monumental garden palace built by Ferdinand I, King of Bohemia and Hungary and Holy Roman Emperor, in the grounds of Prague Castle. Known at the time as a Lusthaus, it was one of the earliest Renaissance buildings in Central Europe and was intended to dominate Prague while symbolising the city’s new political and ideological status. Designed and decorated by Paolo della Stella and Bonifaz Wolmut, construction began in 1537 and continued for several decades, ending with Ferdinand’s death in 1564. The building’s classicising architecture and exceptionally extensive sculptural decoration, inspired by ancient mythology and history, express a humanist vision and celebrate the transfer of the imperial title to the Austrian Habsburgs. The book presents this globally unique monument and its many references to the splendour of ancient Rome.
