This Czech-language book examines the immense cultural transformation of the western Balkans over the past several decades, from local rural communities to globalized economies largely sustained by remittances sent by hundreds of thousands of people who have left to work in the European Union or the United States. It explores this turbulent period through changes in local architecture, from traditional houses built of local wood and stone to pompous villas imitating the suburban homes of Western cities. Why do people who live, work, integrate and raise their children in metropolises thousands of kilometres away invest in building an ostentatious house in their native village, even though they will probably never live there? What models do they use to design and furnish it, and what are the fates of houses without people and people without houses?
