The book attempts to analyze one of the last cultural taboos. It begins with its prehistory in the Bible and antiquity, when this least harmful and most universal form of sexual satisfaction was cultivated practically without the interest of religious and scientific authorities, and ends with the third wave of feminism, conceptual art, and today's online world, where masturbation is still considered something embarrassing and inappropriate. Laqueur sees the beginnings of this attitude in the Enlightenment - specifically at the beginning of the 18th century, when an anonymous treatise titled Onania became the topic of many moral and medical debates.
