The second volume of the history of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences deals with the period when it was led by chemist František Šorm. The 1960s are associated with the relaxation of political conditions, the development of civil society, and an increasing openness to impulses from Western society. The Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences fully utilized these changes, and for many fields, the 1960s were a golden era of development. At the same time, it was a period of significant reforms within the Academy of Sciences and a time of searching for a new position for this most important Czechoslovak non-university scientific institution in society amid economic crisis and fundamental economic reforms. In the challenging and turbulent period at the end of the 1960s, the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, its employees, and its leadership overall stood their ground with honor, even though it meant that the institution fell out of favor with the powerful as one of the 'centers of counter-revolution.'
